Coming off of their World Series victory over the Texas Rangers, the San Francisco Giants are back and ready to defend their championship in 2011.  At the All-Star break, the Giants are sporting a 51-40 record and sits atop the National League West – something they have not done since 2003. The team is led by the top-notch pitching staff consisting of All-Stars Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, and Ryan Voglesong. After losing Rookie of the Year Buster Posey earlier this year due to a leg injury while enduring host of other injuries has certainly taken its toll on the team but outfielder Nate Scherholtz and third basemen Pablo Sandoval have picked up the slack over the past few weeks. None the less, team manager Bruce Bochy has the Giants ready for another deep playoff run in 2011. A visit to AT&T Park will certainly not disappoint after it was awarded the 2008 Sports Facility of the Year by Sports Business Journal and Sports Business Daily.

San Francisco Symphony: A Crescendo of Life and Culture since Disaster

Since its conception in 1911, the San Francisco Symphony has been ingrained into the city life and culture of San Francisco. A hundred years later, its popularity has grown internationally in Asia and Europe while their high standards for music excellence has won them some of the most prestigious awards, including eleven Grammy’s. In many occasions, the group welcome world-renown guest such as Igor Stravinsky, Aaron Copland, and Leonard Bernstein to conduct the group. However, without the occurrence of one particular event, we might not have the privilege of witnessing its greatness today.
On Wednesday, April 18, 1906, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck the coast of Northern California, devastating the city of San Francisco and severely affected other regions of California. Since then, its economic effects on the city has been compared to that of Hurricane Katrina and unsurprisingly remembered as one of the largest natural disasters in the history of the United States. As a result, the establishment of a permanent orchestra became top priority in order to restore the life and spirit of the city. Today, the symphony’s influence on city of San Francisco is as strong as ever.

On Friday (July 29th) the San Francisco Symphony returns to Davies Symphony Hall to perform Music from the Movies with special guest James Lipton. They will be performing themes from famous movies such as Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, and The Godfather. Don’t miss out on this offer!

San Francisco: A Walker’s Paradise

According to a recent survey, the city of San Francisco was ranked second among the top 10 most walkable big cities in the country. And for those wondering, this doesn’t simply refer to the number of sidewalks present in the city. The rankings are based on each city’s walk score, which quantifies how close any address is to amenities like restaurants and grocery stores.  With the everlasting increase in gas prices, this advantage might tip the scale when people decide where they might want to live. According to Walk Score CEO Josh Herst, San Francisco possesses over 30 neighborhoods that are considered as “walkers’ paradise.” These neighborhoods all scored either 90 points or above, proving indeed San Francisco provides a luxury that few other cities do.  Aside from the convenience that it may bring to its residents, this level of accessibility will help San Franciscans fight the current climate changes. With a lessened need for their personal vehicle, less carbon dioxide may be released into the atmosphere.

With the summer dwindling down, it might be time to plan that dream vacation to San Francisco.  By staying at a San Francisco-based hotel like Alpine Inn, you too can enjoy all the nearby amenities without the costs often associated with transportation.  For those who are current residing in San Francisco, do you agree with this walk score? Let us know!

Current San Francisco Mayor to Step Aside

Despite the city’s support, current San Francisco mayor Ed Lee has decided to not run for the upcoming election. According to Michael Yaki, Ed is described as an “anti-incumbent incumbent” whose primary focus is to get things done rather than trying to solidify his support base to win the next mayoral election. For some, his likeability and charm comes from his less than “larger than life” stature – a welcomed change from past San Francisco Mayors. With the deadline fast approaching, more than 30 candidates have already declared their intentions to run for office. Among them include Leland Lee, former supervisor, the city attorney, and current State Senator.

According to a private poll reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, Ed Lee appears to have the support of roughly 70% of the voters. Urged on by former mayor Willie Brown and Chinatown broker Rose Pak to serve as the interim mayor, Lee reluctantly left his second term of office as a city administrator and became San Francisco’s first Asian-American mayor. Among his many accomplishments in his short stay in office, he was able to pull off the least contentious budget process in years while welcoming input from the community. Once his term ends in January, he will likely return to his previous job.

As part of the local San Francisco community, Alpine Inn encourages all voters to take part in the election as possible new policies and legislations can have dramatic effects on the community.
